How to Remove the Doors from Your Jeep
Removing the doors from your Jeep is one of the easiest ways to experience open-air freedom and is a classic move for any Jeep owner. Whether you’re cruising the beach or hitting the trail, this quick DIY will have you doorless and smiling in no time.
⚠️ Disclaimer: Always check local laws before driving doorless — some areas require side mirrors or may prohibit doorless driving altogether.
Step 1: Roll Down Your Windows
This helps protect the glass and gives you something to grab when lifting the door off.
Step 2: Disconnect the Door Strap
Open the door slightly and locate the check strap (the nylon strap that keeps your door from swinging open too far). Unclip it from the hook inside the door frame.
Step 3: Unplug the Wiring Harness
You’ll find a small wiring connector near the bottom of the A-pillar. Push the red tab over, then press the release and pull the connector out gently. Set the harness aside or secure it with a zip tie.
Step 4: Remove the Hinge Bolts
Use a T-50 Torx bit to unscrew the bolts on the underside of each door hinge (they’re visible with the door open). Be sure to store the bolts somewhere safe — there’s usually a spot for them in your cargo bin or glove box.
🧠 Pro Tip: A little anti-seize on the bolts makes future removal even easier.
Step 5: Lift the Door Off
Grip the door by the window frame and bottom edge. Lift straight up — the doors slide off the hinge pins. They can be heavy (especially rear doors), so a second set of hands helps here.
Step 6: Store Your Doors Safely
Keep your doors out of the elements and away from kids or pets. Jeep sells door storage bags, or you can lean them against a padded wall in your garage.
You’re now free to enjoy that open-air Jeep life. Just don’t forget your mirrors — many aftermarket options exist to keep you street-legal.
Just reverse the steps: slide the doors back on the hinge pins, reconnect wiring and straps, bolt everything back down, and you’re good to go.
