How to Take Off a Jeep Hard Top or Soft Top
Whether you’re heading to the beach, cruising through the mountains, or just soaking in the sun on a Sunday drive — taking the top off your Jeep is one of the most iconic open-air experiences a Jeep owner can have.
This guide will walk you through hard top removal step-by-step so you can get out and enjoy the breeze.
What You’ll Need:For Hard Top:
- T-40 Torx bit (included in most Jeep tool kits)
- Ratchet or impact driver
- At least one friend (trust us, it helps)
- Storage space or a hard top hoist system (optional but helpful)
Removing the Hard Top (JK, JL, or Gladiator)
Step 1: Remove Freedom Panels (Front Panels)
- Inside the cabin, flip the latches and levers securing the two front roof panels.
- Unscrew the two fasteners on the sounds bar (JK ONLY)
- Lift the panels off and set them somewhere soft and clean (like on a blanket or in a storage bag).
Step 2: Disconnect the Rear Wiper and Defroster Wires
- On the driver-side rear corner, open the tailgate and locate the wiring harness and washer fluid tube.
- Disconnect both by pinching the tabs and gently pulling them out.
Step 3: Remove the Torx Bolts
- Using a T-40 Torx bit, remove the bolts around the perimeter of the hard top — usually 6 on a 2-door and 8 on a 4-door.
- Don’t forget the two bolts just above the rear seatbelt area.
💡 Pro Tip: Keep the bolts in a labeled bag or use the storage tray in your cargo floor if your Jeep has one.
Step 4: Lift the Top Off
- Grab a friend (or two) and carefully lift the hard top up and off the Jeep.
- Walk it back and set it down somewhere level, ideally on a padded surface to prevent scratching.
You’re Ready to Ride!
Now that you’ve got the top off, you’re officially in Jeep mode. Just be sure to check the weather (no one likes a surprise thunderstorm), and stow your removed parts safely.
